The Brisfit comes of age.

The unfortunate aircraft being flown as the method dictated suffered further losses and moral dropped, was this aircraft not the hoped for cure for the Boche's triumphs! Pilots became dissullisioned until several tried flying it as a fighter and using the front mounted gun as if flying a single seater, the observer looking out for himself. The result was immediate and striking, what the pilots were to discover was that this aircraft was built to last, it could obsorb tremendous punishment but could also sting, Patrols began coming back without loss, they were shooting down the enemy and pilots were claiming more than their observers in kills. Word spread as other squadrons re-equipped, moral grew, new tactics for flying this 'Brisfit' evolved and the tide of air warfare over the Western Front began to change.

One pilot, Lt A E McKeever and his observer Sgt. Powell, proved beyond doubt that a determined crew flying a Bristol Fighter were all but unstoppable. From September to October 1917 they destroyed 20 enemy aircraft and in one melee when attcked by seven Albatros and two-seaters shot down one of the two-seaters and three of the Albatros, two by Powell with his rear gun, the fighting ability of the Bristol Fighter was finally showing its worth and erasing the early casualties suffered by No 11 Squadron. A glowing report of the aircraft was made by Major vere Bettington, CO of No. 48 Squadron using the aircraft in France. His letter begins 'Regarding the Bristol, she is a topping two-seater, the best here'.

In the great offensive push of 1918, Bristol fighter equipped squadrons took a major part in strafing the advancing enemy infantry, flying at ground level with guns blazing and blasting the enemy batteries with 20lb Cooper and 112lb Hale bombs. They flew to support the hard pressed Third and Fifth armies, thus gaining respect from ground troops as weel as the airmen who flew them. The Bristol Fighter went on to fight everywhere from the cold of the Western Front to the arid wastes of Palestine. They even flew over the Alps!.
